With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering can be enormous. Volunteering offers vital help to people in need, but the benefits can be even greater for the volunteer. Volunteering allowed me to connect to my community and make it a better place. It brought fun and fulfillment in my life. It enabled me develop skills which are of importance to my career. I gave me a chance to think critically and come up with better solutions to the problems that were facing Mbagathi Road.

With the free basic education, the number of students in most of our public schools outweighs the number of teachers. The teachers therefore aren’t able to utilize the available resources to give the pupils 100%. They therefore need assistance as I saw at Mbagathi Road Primary.

It was always a great joy waking up very early in the morning to go and volunteer at Mbagathi Road Primary.

It reminds me how I would forego breakfast just to cater for the needs of the pupils. I would always see from the faces of the kids that they appreciated our presence.

One of the common rooms dreaded by the kids would later become like a home to them all.

We became like a link between the teachers and the pupils. The kids were always ready to share with the teachers

Volunteering connected me with others. Dedicating my time as a volunteer enabled me make new friends, expand my network and boost my social skills. It strengthened my ties to the community and broadened my support network, exposing me to people with common interests, neighborhood resources, and fun and fulfilling activities.

One of the key task that we had involved coming up with slides for each class and therefore making the resource room accessible to all.

C.R.E Lesson Underway

We took it as a responsibility to ensure that the resource room was mopped every morning and that it was conducive for learning. During that time Mbagathi Road Primary got an award for being one of the schools embracing E-Learning and with one of the well maintained resource room. Am really proud to say this.

Volunteering was a fun and easy way to explore my interests and passions. Doing volunteer work made me find meaningful and interesting activities to engage myself into. It enabled me relax, energize and escape from my day-to-day routine or family commitments. Volunteering also provided me with renewed creativity, motivation, and vision that could carry over into my personal and professional life. I got a platform to showcase my talent through the kids. Composing songs and poems that enabled them win a trophy and other gifts were an encouragement to me.

I wouldn’t forget how the class three kids would run unto me every morning calling me Mrs. Ochola instead of Mr. Ochola. They made me smile.

Access education international (AEI) gave me an opportunity of a lifetime. It is the best organization that would solve issues of teenage pregnancy and drug abuse for school leavers (An idle mind is the devils workshop)

One lesson that I learnt: I will continue volunteering for my entire life.
